Interactive Flamenco

Duende is a Whole Body Interactive Dance Performance System that was developed during a workshop with the professional flamenco dancer Marisa Dima. The dancer was able to produce and control sound only by using her physical skills in flamenco dance. The sonic structures were composed in real time and were based on a specific 12 beat rhythmic structure (palo) known as Bulerias. Bulerias is the quickest and most complex of all flamenco palos. The aim was to reveal and exploit the intensity the key parts of the body that form the kinaesthetic elements of Flamenco.

The study of the dance itself, and the real-time data observation assisted in defining thresholds and links that map the intensity of the key body parts to a sonic vocabulary that is understandable by the dancer.

Here is a video from an earlier stage that illustrates the potential of such approach

Duende highlights the introduction of cultural content in Whole Body Interactive Performances, manifesting our vision of an Interactive Performance Art that aims to reach a wider audience by promoting accessibility and immediacy, together with play and engagement for both the performer and the audience.
