CV

Vangelis Lympouridis was born in Greece in 1978. He studied Physics at the University of Ioannina in Greece, and took classes at the Fine Art and Modern Technology program at the Technical University of Crete where he attended a two week workshop with Allan Kaprow. He later received his diploma in painting and sculpture at the Vakalo School of Art and Design in Athens. Upon the completion of the latter he was accepted at the Sculpture and Environmental Art department of the Glasgow School of Art, where he graduated with a BA(hons) in 2005.

Immediately after, he continued his studies at the University of Edinburgh and in 2006 he received his MSc in Sound Design. For his final project he was awarded the Alumni Prize as well as offered a three month internship at the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh.

Vangelis currently lives in Edinburgh, where he is working on his PhD thesis under a full scholarship from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC-UK). His research explores “Whole Body Interaction Design Strategies” for applications in Interactive Art, Digital Music, Dance and Performances. Consequently, he is focused on the potential of real time sonification of movement within an artistic context. All of his projects have been realized through the innovative use of the wireless sensor based, Motion Capture system Orient-3 provided by the Speckled Computing Consortium, at the University of Edinburgh.

While there, he regularly supervises MSc Sound Design and MSc Digital Media students. Additionally, he is part of the “CIRCLE” research group at Edinburgh College of Arts (ECA).

In 2008 he was awarded a Small Project Grant from the University of Edinburgh towards his research. His work has been presented in several conferences including CHI 2009 in Boston and SMC07, and he has so far published four papers related to his findings, all of which can be found here:

The interactive installation was titled “Athens by Sound”.

Additional professional affiliations include gallery space OlivePress Art Factory in Chania, Crete, University of Southern California, and Choreo Theatro Company in New York.
